A police officer in Denver channeled his inner magician to steal $1,200. Unfortunately for him, he's now in hot water thanks to an eagle-eyed detective who spotted the switcheroo on footage from the crooked cop's own bodycam.
The incident took place back in October when 48-year-old Julian Archuleta arrived at the scene of a wreck involving a shooting suspect who crashed his car. Bodycam footage shows the cop carrying out proper procedure by searching through the suspect’s car.
When Archuleta uncovers a fat stack of cash, though, all propriety goes out the window. Tilting his bodycam away, Archuleta sorts out 12 hundred-dollar bills from the treasure trove before transferring the funds to his other hand.
By the time the bodycam is facing the car again, Archuleta appears to be placing the same stack of cash back where he found it. He suspiciously rearranges the clutter to look like it did before he touched it.
Later, investigators recorded that they found $118 in the car with no $100 bills in sight. When a detective reviewed Archuleta’s bodycam footage and spotted a C-note, the jig was up.
Archuleta quickly buckled under the pressure of internal affairs and handed $1,200 that “must have fallen into his bag.” Totally, dude.
The disgraced cop pleaded guilty to stealing, resigned from his job, and will now be on probation for 18 months.
